'The Lunchbox' for our movie appetite

If you are looking for an unusually beautiful heart-touching story, here is a movie recommendation for you!

The Lunchbox released in 2013, written and directed by Ritesh Batra starring Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead roles. It has a simple yet an interesting storyline. Nimrat Kaur plays the character of Ila Sehgal, a young mother and a housewife. The lunchbox sent by Ila for her husband is accidentally delivered at  the office desk of Saajan Fernades, played by Irrfan Khan. Saajan is a widower, and is on the verge of his retirement. They both exchange letters through the lunchbox and that is what the story revolves around.

They gradually grow a bond and in the process of writing letters they rediscover themselves, sharing their memories and experiences. They both are lonely in their lives but find a ray of hope through these lunchbox conversations. Aslam Sheikh is another important character, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Aslam is an orphan and a newcomer in the office of Saajan. Saajan who was earlier socially distant from everybody gradually develops a friendship with Aslam.

The movie is very well written and directed. Though it has a slow pace but the storyline is gripping enough to make you excited to read the letters each time they open the lunchbox. The storyline does not spoon feed its audience, rather gives them scope for some open interpretations. Unlike the usual Bollywood romantic movies with extraordinary sets and a number of song sequences to up the drama quotient, this one sticks to simplicity which makes its storyline and characters relatable. The movie is based in Mumbai, and the cinematography perfectly captures the essence of Mumbai’s local trains and the famous Tiffin service.

All the actors have done a very fine job and have delivered amazing performances. Needless to say, Irrfan Khan’s acting with his eyes and effortless expressions brings life to the movie. Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin’s acting is also perfectly delivered in every scene.

The movie gives out a message of hope and a story that revolves around finding happiness. The way both the characters find happiness and hope in the most unexpected ways brings a smile on our faces. It is a hear- touching story which tells you not to lose hope. It teaches us that things are never that bad as we think and we never know what destiny has planned for us, you can find happiness in the most

unlikeliest places.

"Sometimes even the wrong train takes us to the right station.” is the line that sums up the heartwarming story of ‘The Lunchbox’.
